Gippsland Lakes

The largest inland lake system in Australia!

Sailing on the LakesThe tranquil Gippsland Lakes is the ultimate playground for all. Stretching out over 400 sq km, the lakes are a network of inland waterways. Feeding the ‘Lakes’ are three of East Gippsland’s famous rivers – the Mitchell, Nicholson and Tambo. Boat, sail, swim, canoe, kayak, fish; in fact you can experience just about any water activity, so make a splash.

Our lakeside villages of Paynesville, Raymond Island, Lakes Entrance and Metung surround the water's edge of the three major lakes, Lake King, Lake Victoria & Lake Wellington. Bairnsdale is known as the ‘gateway to the lakes’. It is the region’s commercial centre set on the Mitchell River.

The ‘Lakes’ abound with beautiful natural places such as the Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park – a water peninsula stretching from Seaspray to Lakes Entrance, and the Lakes National Park fringed by the waters of Lakes Victoria & Reeves Channel and including Rotamah Island, haven of many birds.

Paynesville

The boating capital of the Gippsland Lakes!

Paynesville is surrounded by Lake King and Lake Victoria in the middle of the Gippsland Lakes. Canals carve their way through the town to offer a unique waterside locale. Raymond Island, just off the shoreline is a nature lover’s paradise and home to a large koala colony.

Boats, boats and more boats. You will fall in love with the nautical here. Quietly sophisticated but family friendly you will have a truly water filled experience. Water or jet-ski, boat, sailboard or kite board, you have found the perfect playground. Raymond Island is accessed by a car ferry that departs regularly. Only a 2minute trip, take you car over and drive down many roads or bush tracks to find Koalas in their natural habitat. Drive to nearby Eagle Point and the Mitchell River Silt Jetties. Only the Mississippi River silt jetties are longer than ours.

Bairnsdale

Known as the Gateway to East Gippsland, Bairnsdale is the commercial centre of East Gippsland and only 18 kilometers from your marina berth. Set on the banks of the Mitchell River, Bairnsdale, once home to steam boats & traders, is a thriving provincial town providing all the services you will need.

90 Mile Beach

Stretching out like a long, yellow snake is the famous 90 Mile Beach. Long, slender sand dunes- a natural barrier - divide the ocean of Bass Strait from the Gippsland Lakes. Stand on the beach and take in the coastline as it disappears into the wonderful salty sea spray in the distance. Yours might be the only footprints in the sand that day.
